Bangor, Maine – A York man has been sentenced to one month in prison for making false statements to a federal agent.
Mark Elkhorn, 58, was sentenced today in U.S. District Court by Judge Jon D. Levy to one month in prison and three years of supervised release for making false statements to a federal agent. He pleaded guilty to the offense on January 18, 2018.
According to court records, in October 2015, a witness provided a tip to law enforcement that Elkhorn was illegally trapping animals in Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge. An investigation confirmed the tip and uncovered additional wrongdoing.
As a result, Elkhorn was convicted of state and federal charges. In December 2016, Elkhorn sent a threatening text message from his cellular telephone to the witness. In January 2017, Elkhorn lied to a federal agent when he denied sending the threatening text message to the witness.
The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the FBI, and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.
In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said, ‘Mark Elkhorn’s actions were a clear attempt to obstruct justice and intimidate a witness.’ The office also stated that Elkhorn’s sentence reflects the seriousness of his crimes.
