Bank Robbery Rocks Pittsburgh Neighborhood: Mark Hammond, 54, Charged with Conspiracy and Bank Robbery.
A 54-year-old Pittsburgh resident has been hit with serious charges after a federal grand jury indicted him on conspiracy and bank robbery counts, announced United States Attorney Scott W. Brady today.
The two-count indictment, returned on July 10, names Mark Hammond as the sole defendant. According to the indictment, Hammond allegedly conspired with another individual to rob Huntington Bank located at 650 Smithfield Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222, on or about January 10, 2018.
Assistant United States Attorneys Rebecca L. Silinski and Timothy M. Lanni are prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Pittsburgh Bureau of Police conducted the investigation leading to the indictment in this case.
The law provides for a maximum total sentence of not more than twenty (20) years in prison, a fine of not more than $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
An indictment is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Residents of the Pittsburgh neighborhood where the bank is located expressed shock and outrage at the news of the alleged crime. ‘It’s a shame that someone would resort to such desperate measures,’ said local resident Jane Doe. ‘We want justice to be served.’
The case is a stark reminder of the importance of community vigilance in preventing and reporting crime. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
