Mark Anthony Hill, 32, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury in Indian Country. The charges stem from an alleged incident on August 23 in McKinley County, New Mexico, where Hill allegedly beat his brother with a baseball bat.
According to the complaint, Hill got into an argument with his brother while drinking alcohol. The argument escalated, and Hill allegedly struck his brother with his fists, knocking him to the ground. Hill then retrieved a baseball bat and struck his brother in the head and torso, causing serious injuries, including fractures to the victim’s skull and jaw, a dislocated shoulder, and a torn left ear.
The Navajo Nation Department of Criminal Investigations arrested Hill on August 26. He appeared in federal court in Albuquerque, where a U.S. magistrate judge ordered him held in custody pending trial. If convicted, Hill faces up to ten years in prison on each assault charge.
The Crownpoint District of the Navajo Nation Police Department investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas J. Aliberti is prosecuting. A criminal complaint is only an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
The incident highlights the ongoing issue of violence in Indian Country, where law enforcement agencies often face unique challenges in investigating and prosecuting crimes. The Navajo Nation has been working to address these challenges and improve public safety, but more work remains to be done.
