MARK LEGOWSKI Pleads Guilty to Filing False Tax Returns, Farmington CT, 2023

MARK LEGOWSKI, a 60-year-old accountant from Farmington, has been accused of engaging in a brazen tax scam that left the IRS facing a staggering loss of $499,289.

According to court documents, LEGOWSKI, who operated a business called Legowski & Company, Inc. (LCI), willfully underreported his company’s gross receipts by excluding customer payment checks. This deliberate omission led to the filing of false personal income tax returns, which LEGOWSKI submitted to the IRS.

The scheme, which spanned from 2015 to 2017, involved LEGOWSKI preparing income tax returns for approximately 400 to 500 individual clients and 50 to 60 businesses. For the 2015 through 2017 tax years, LEGOWSKI failed to report a total of more than $1.4 million in business income, resulting in a significant loss to the IRS.

One particularly egregious example of LEGOWSKI’s tax evasion came in 2017, when he reported taxable income of $56,060 and a tax liability of $6,070, while failing to report an additional $496,808 in business income. This dishonesty resulted in an income tax deficiency of $178,581.

On March 28, 2024, LEGOWSKI waived his right to be indicted and pleaded guilty to filing false tax returns before U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley in Bridgeport. The judge scheduled sentencing for November 25, at which time LEGOWSKI faces a maximum term of imprisonment of three years.

As part of his plea agreement, LEGOWSKI has agreed to cooperate with the IRS to pay $499,289 in back taxes, as well as penalties and interest. He was released on a $50,000 bond pending sentencing.

The investigation into LEGOWSKI’s tax scam was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation Division. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Hal Chen. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of honesty and transparency in financial dealings.
