Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury
Albuquerque, New Mexico – In a disturbing case of domestic violence, Mark Patrick Eddy, a 45-year-old Navajo man from Chi-Chi-Tah, N.M., pleaded guilty to assaulting his intimate partner, a Navajo woman, on June 21, 2013. Eddy’s violent actions resulted in serious bodily injury to the victim, who required medical attention. The assault occurred at a residence located on the Navajo Indian Reservation.
According to the criminal complaint filed on January 14, 2014, Eddy kicked his girlfriend in the head with his cowboy boots, causing a laceration to the right temple of her head.
Eddy was arrested on January 14, 2014, and has been in federal custody ever since. As part of his plea agreement, Eddy will be sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison, followed by a term of supervised release to be determined by the court.
The case was investigated by the Crownpoint office of the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety and is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney David Adams. The case is part of the Tribal Special Assistant U.S. Attorney (Tribal SAUSA) Pilot Project, sponsored by the Justice Department’s Office on Violence Against Women under a grant administered by the Pueblo of Laguna.
The Tribal SAUSA Pilot Project aims to train tribal prosecutors in federal law, procedure, and investigative techniques to increase the likelihood of prosecuting violent offenses against Native women in federal or tribal courts. This project is another step in the Justice Department’s ongoing efforts to engage, coordinate, and address public safety in tribal communities.
