Markell Reyes, a 19-year-old from Jersey City, New Jersey, has been indicted for possessing crack cocaine and heroin with the intent to distribute them, according to a statement released by the United States Attorney’s Office.
The indictment was announced by United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian, along with Chief Patrol Agent John C. Pfeifer of the United States Border Patrol, Swanton Sector, and Special Agent in Charge James J. Hunt of the New York Division, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
According to the indictment, Reyes is accused of possessing approximately 60 grams of crack cocaine and 250 bags of heroin, as well as a revolver. The charges against him are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The incident that led to Reyes’ indictment occurred on March 21, 2017, when he got out of a taxi in Ogdensburg, New York, and fled on foot after encountering a Border Patrol agent who was questioning the driver. Reyes was ultimately detained, and a search of his bag, which was left in the taxi, revealed the crack cocaine, heroin, and revolver.
Reyes appeared in court on March 21, 2017, before United States Magistrate Judge Gary L. Favro, and was detained pending a trial before United States District Court Judge David N. Hurd. If convicted on all counts, Reyes faces at least 5 years and up to 40 years in prison, as well as a term of post-imprisonment supervision of at least 4 years and up to life, and a fine of up to $5 million.
This case is being investigated by the U.S. Border Patrol and DEA, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Cyrus P.W. Rieck. The investigation and prosecution of Reyes serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and distribution in the United States.
The indictment of Markell Reyes is a significant development in the fight against drug trafficking, and highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies. As the case against Reyes moves forward, it will be closely watched by those interested in the ongoing efforts to combat drug distribution and possession.
