Marquavius Benjamin, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Alabama 2024

A Selma man was sentenced to eight years in prison for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon in Alabama.

Marquavius Benjamin, 25, was sentenced to 96 months in prison for the crime, which he committed on October 4, 2024. According to court documents, the incident occurred at Creekside Apartments in Selma, Alabama.

A Selma Police Department officer responded to a call about a stolen vehicle at the apartment complex and heard shots being fired nearby. The officer’s body camera shows Benjamin approaching him as he calls for backup.

Benjamin handed over a Glock, semi-automatic pistol to the officer but resisted efforts to be taken into custody. The officer deployed his Taser after Benjamin made an aggressive move, and he was subsequently taken into custody.

Further investigation revealed that Benjamin was a convicted felon with prior felony convictions in Dallas county for Robbery in the First Degree in 2018, Felony Murder and Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle in 2024, and Escape in the Third Degree in 2024.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Selma Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF) investigated the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew D. Arrington prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States, with the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Alabama praising the work of law enforcement in removing criminals from the streets.
