Marquis Henry Mack, Possessing Firearm as Convicted Felon, Florida 2023

Sarasota, FL – In a shocking turn of events, a local resident has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being caught with a loaded firearm. Marquis Henry Mack, a 33-year-old Sarasota resident, was handed a 37-month prison sentence by U.S. District Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell.

According to authorities, the incident occurred on January 4, 2023, when deputies from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office responded to Mack’s residence to serve a narcotics-related arrest warrant issued in Manatee County. As deputies approached Mack in his driveway, he turned around and attempted to walk towards his garage, ignoring verbal commands to stop. The deputies grabbed hold of Mack, and in the ensuing struggle, they pulled a loaded SCCY CPX-1 9mm caliber pistol from his front pocket.

Mack, a previously convicted felon, had served an 18-month state prison sentence in 2021 for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. As a convicted felon, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, and the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorneys David W.A. Chee and Samantha E. Beckman handled the prosecution.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement agencies and community organizations. The program is based on core principles of fostering trust and legitimacy, supporting community-based prevention initiatives, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
