The streets of Chicago witnessed a terrifying exchange of gunfire on May 6, 2024, that left a trail of fear and destruction in its wake. Now, one man is facing federal charges for his alleged role in the chaos.

Marquist Evans, 30, of Chicago, has been indicted for illegally possessing a loaded handgun during the violent encounter. According to court documents, Evans fired numerous shots from a handgun while standing in the doorway of a gas station in the 500 block of West Grenshaw Street in Chicago.

The indictment, unsealed in U.S. District Court in Chicago, charges Evans with illegal possession of a machine gun and ammunition. Furthermore, the authorities claim that Evans’ handgun was equipped with a conversion device, also known as a ‘Glock switch,’ which allowed the firearm to fire multiple rounds with a single pull of the trigger.

The investigation into the incident was conducted in coordination with the ATF’s Crime Gun Intelligence Center of Chicago, a centralized law enforcement hub that focuses on investigating and preventing gun violence in Chicago and northern Illinois.

The case marks another notable example of the efforts of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating violent crime through federal prosecution. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Illinois has deployed the program to tackle a range of violent crime issues, including firearm offenses.

‘Our office is using every available law enforcement tool to continue to bring impactful cases that hold firearm offenders accountable and reduce violent crime in Chicago,’ said Acting U.S. Attorney Morris Pasqual. ‘Combating the unacceptable level of gun violence in Chicago will continue to be a top priority in our office.’

Evans is currently in law enforcement custody and is set to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Keri L. Holleb Hotaling for arraignment on August 15, 2024, at 10:30 a.m.

The charges against Evans are punishable by a maximum sentence of 25 years in federal prison. An indictment is not evidence of guilt, and Evans is presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
