Bluefield, West Virginia – In a move to combat the illicit sale and misuse of prescription drugs, a local resident has been sentenced to prison for his role in the distribution of hydromorphone.
On March 14, 2016, Marvin Gillespie, 65, sold hydromorphone to a confidential informant working with law enforcement in Bluefield. The transaction was part of an ongoing investigation by the Southern Regional Drug and Violent Crime Task Force.
Gillespie previously pleaded guilty to distribution of hydromorphone and was sentenced to a year and a half in federal prison for that offense. He was also sentenced to an additional year and three months in prison for violating his federal supervised release. The sentences will be served consecutively.
The Bluefield Pill Initiative, a program led by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, aims to combat the illicit sale and misuse of prescription drugs and heroin. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, joined by federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, is committed to aggressively pursuing and shutting down illegal pill trafficking and eliminating open-air drug markets.
As part of this effort, the Southern District of West Virginia continues to pursue individuals who engage in the distribution of controlled substances, including hydromorphone.
