MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – John Ryan Zajac, a 31-year-old from Parkville, Maryland, was handed a 135-month federal prison sentence for his involvement in a firearms and cocaine exchange that nearly came to a deadly conclusion on social media.
According to court documents, Zajac had planned to trade illegal substances for firearms through online channels. His scheme unraveled when investigators swooped in at the last minute during an attempted trade, seizing cocaine and a 9mm pistol from his possession. The arrest was a stark reminder of Zajac’s troubled past; he is already barred from owning firearms due to prior convictions for armed robbery and firearms violations.
U.S. District Judge Gina M. Groh presided over the sentencing hearing, where Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Kane presented the government’s case. Following his prison term, Zajac will be subject to three years of supervised release, ensuring that he remains under close watch.
The investigation into Zajac’s activities was spearheaded by the Bureau for Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), a federal law enforcement agency known for its aggressive stance against gun-related crimes. The ATF’s relentless pursuit of Zajac resulted in the successful disruption of his criminal endeavors.
John Ryan Zajac’s sentence sends a clear message that the federal government is committed to curbing illegal arms and drug trafficking across state lines. The community of Martinsburg, West Virginia, can take some comfort in knowing that justice has been served for those who seek to undermine public safety through such dangerous activities.
In a statement, Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Kane emphasized the importance of the ATF’s role in preventing firearms from falling into the wrong hands. ‘The ATF is dedicated to keeping our communities safe,’ said Kane, ‘and this case is another example of their effectiveness in doing so.’
