Martinsburg, West Virginia – In a stunning admission, 23-year-old Todd Dwayne Mills, Jr. from Hagerstown, Maryland, has pleaded guilty to a serious firearms charge.
Mills confessed to providing false statements on forms while attempting to purchase two 9mm pistols in Berkeley County in March 2021. The deceitful act led to his arrest and subsequent court appearance.
With the charge of “False Statement During Purchase of Firearms,” Mills now faces a severe penalty. If convicted, he could be incarcerated for up to ten years and fined as much as $250,000. The final sentence will be determined by the seriousness of his offense and any prior criminal history he may have.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Omps-Botteicher is spearheading the prosecution for the government, with support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble presided over the court proceedings.
Mills’ guilty plea comes as a stark reminder of the consequences of lying on firearms purchase forms, underscoring the strict regulations in place to prevent illegal gun possession and sales.
As this case unfolds, it underscores the ongoing efforts by federal authorities to crack down on gun-related crimes in West Virginia and across the nation.
