BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A brazen kidnapping plot unraveled in Jefferson County, Alabama, culminating in the indictment of two suspects accused of demanding a quarter-million dollar ransom. Matthew Amos Burke, 34, and Tabatha Nicole Hodges, 32, now face federal charges after allegedly snatching a man from his home and holding him for payment.
According to federal prosecutors, the nightmare began on September 11, 2020, when Burke and Hodges forcibly entered the victim’s residence. The pair then transported the man to a location in Remlap, Alabama, initiating a terrifying ordeal designed to squeeze $250,000 from his family. The scheme worked – a wire transfer for the full amount landed in an account controlled by Hodges.
But the release wasn’t clean. After receiving the ransom, Burke and Hodges allegedly returned the victim to his home, delivering a chilling threat: if he contacted law enforcement, his family would suffer. The victim, understandably shaken, initially remained silent, but the incident quickly drew the attention of multiple agencies.
The FBI and the U.S. Secret Service took the lead on the investigation, quickly joined by the Birmingham and Mountain Brook Police Departments. The collaborative effort pieced together the details of the abduction, the ransom demand, and the subsequent transfer of funds, leading to the indictment of Burke and Hodges. Both suspects are charged with one count of conspiracy and one count of kidnapping.
If convicted, Burke and Hodges face a significant prison sentence. Conspiracy carries a maximum penalty of five years behind bars. The kidnapping charge, however, is far more severe, potentially resulting in a life sentence. Assistant United States Attorneys John G. Camp and William G. Simpson are prosecuting the case.
It’s crucial to remember that an indictment is not a finding of guilt. Burke and Hodges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, the charges paint a disturbing picture of a calculated and ruthless crime that terrorized a Birmingham family. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds.
