Former Professor Matthew Queen Charged with Obstruction of Justice in New York
Matthew Queen, a former professor at a seminary in New York, has been charged with obstruction of justice for allegedly falsifying records and obstructing a federal investigation. The charges were announced by Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and James Smith, the Assistant Director in Charge of the New York Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
According to the allegations, Queen attempted to interfere with a federal grand jury investigation by creating false notes in an attempt to corroborate his own lies. The FBI interviewed Queen in Fort Worth, Texas, regarding the investigation, and he falsely stated that he had not heard someone direct another to destroy a document. Three days later, Queen falsely stated to another seminary employee that he had just located a notebook containing purportedly contemporaneous notes of the meeting, which omitted the fact that someone had directed another to destroy the document.
The investigation is ongoing and involves allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct related to a national religious denomination and its affiliated entities. In October 2022, a grand jury subpoena was issued to a seminary affiliated with the denomination, requiring the production of all documents related to allegations of sexual abuse.
Queen is accused of violating a court order and delaying justice for the victims of sexual abuse. The FBI will never tolerate those who intentionally lie and mislead their investigation in an attempt to conceal their malicious behavior.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, and Queen is being represented by counsel. The investigation is ongoing, and further charges may be brought.
