Maylene John, Second-Degree Murder, New Mexico 2022

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A mother from Shiprock has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of her 7-year-old daughter. Maylene John, 33, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, will remain in custody pending trial, which has not been scheduled.

The alleged crime took place on Oct. 24, 2022, when John allegedly stabbed her daughter in the chest. According to the indictment and other court records, John claimed not to know what precipitated the stabbing and that she “blacked out” after the incident.
