NEWARK, N.J. – Violeta McGough, 57, of Bergenfield, New Jersey, is headed to federal prison after admitting to a brazen, years-long scheme to steal nearly $900,000 from her employer. U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced today that McGough was sentenced to 27 months behind bars for wire fraud.
McGough, a former accounting specialist at an insurance broker in Ridgefield Park, systematically siphoned funds collected as insurance premiums between 2008 and October 2015. The victim-company – identified in court documents as “Victim-Company 1” – acted as an intermediary, collecting premiums for policies underwritten by a UK-based insurance syndicate. McGough, tasked with tracking these payments, instead saw an opportunity for personal enrichment.
The scheme was meticulously crafted. McGough falsified accounting entries, disguising the stolen funds as reimbursements for canceled policies. She directed Victim-Company 1 to issue checks to an individual – “Individual 1” – falsely presented as an employee of a premium financing company. This Individual 1 didn’t actually work for the company, and the checks were deposited into their account, with the bulk of the stolen funds then funneled back to McGough.
Federal investigators uncovered the intricate web of deceit, revealing how McGough exploited her position of trust over a seven-year period. The scale of the fraud – nearly a million dollars – is a stark reminder of the damage individuals can inflict through calculated financial manipulation. Judge Madeline Cox Arleo handed down the 27-month sentence in Newark federal court, along with three years of supervised release following her incarceration.
The investigation was a joint effort led by postal inspectors with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, under Inspector in Charge James Buthorn, and special agents from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney David W. Feder of the Criminal Division in Newark spearheaded the prosecution. McGough was represented by David Holman Esq., Assistant Federal Public Defender.
This case highlights the ongoing commitment of federal authorities to pursue and prosecute those who engage in sophisticated financial crimes. The Grimy Times will continue to monitor the fallout and any potential recovery of the stolen funds. The victim-company has not yet released a statement.
