Ronnie White Mountain, Assaulting a Federal Officer, South Dakota 2013

A South Dakota man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for assaulting a federal officer. Ronnie White Mountain, 44, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann on May 13, 2013, after pleading guilty to a Superseding Information on October 15, 2012.

The incident occurred on February 1, 2012, near McLaughlin, South Dakota, when a federal law enforcement officer observed White Mountain driving erratically. The officer followed him for a period of time before activating his lights when White Mountain pulled into a private residence.

When the officer attempted to determine if White Mountain was under the influence of alcohol, he refused to comply. The officer then attempted to arrest him, but White Mountain became combative and removed the Taser leads before charging at the officer.

White Mountain was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley. He was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshal after the sentencing.

As part of his sentence, White Mountain will also serve one year of supervised release and pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

White Mountain was indicted by a federal grand jury in June of 2012, and his case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers on the job.

The sentencing of Ronnie White Mountain serves as a warning to those who would consider assaulting a federal officer, and the Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and provide updates as necessary.
