TAMPA, FL – A leisurely evening along Tampa’s Riverwalk turned terrifying in late July, allegedly at the hands of 38-year-old Meccos Donta Allen. Allen has now been formally indicted on federal charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, a charge that carries a hefty penalty if he’s convicted. According to court documents, Allen wasn’t just carrying a gun; he was allegedly using it to menace innocent bystanders.
Prosecutors laid out a disturbing account in court, detailing two separate confrontations on July 29th. The first involved a couple enjoying a swing on the Riverwalk. Allen reportedly followed them back to their apartment complex, and, as they attempted to enter, allegedly brandished a firearm. Moments later, Allen targeted another couple seated on a bench, allegedly pointing the gun at one victim and physically assaulting another.
The situation escalated quickly, prompting a response from the Tampa Police Department. As officers approached, Allen took off running, discarding a Glock pistol in his desperate flight. The gun, now evidence, connects Allen to the alleged crimes. But this wasn’t a spontaneous act of violence; Allen’s history is riddled with prior felony convictions, making firearm possession illegal for him under federal law.
Those convictions include battery, delivery of cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of cocaine with intent to deliver, and further cocaine delivery charges. This pre-existing criminal record is central to the prosecution’s case, establishing that Allen was knowingly and illegally armed when he allegedly terrorized people on the Riverwalk. If found guilty, Allen faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 15 years in federal prison, with the potential for a life sentence.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Tampa Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, showcasing a collaborative push to combat violent crime. Assistant United States Attorney David P. Sullivan will lead the prosecution, with Assistant United States Attorney Suzanne C. Nebesky handling the forfeiture proceedings. The case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice program aimed at reducing gun violence and improving community safety.
An indictment is, crucially, not a conviction. Allen is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. However, the allegations paint a grim picture of a man allegedly preying on citizens enjoying a public space, armed with a firearm he was legally barred from possessing. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly send a message about the consequences of gun violence in the city of Tampa.
