MEMPHIS, TN – P.T. Services, Inc., a Memphis-based diesel engine repair shop, has admitted to deliberately circumventing federal environmental regulations. The company pleaded guilty today to violations of the Clean Air Act, a move that confirms a pattern of prioritizing profit over public health and environmental protection.
According to court documents filed in the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, P.T. Services, Inc. engaged in the illegal modification and deletion of emissions control monitoring devices on diesel engines brought in for repair. This isn’t just a paperwork issue; it’s a direct attempt to unleash harmful pollutants into the atmosphere, impacting air quality and public health.
Interim United States Attorney Joseph C. Murphy, Jr. announced the guilty plea, signaling a firm stance against environmental crimes. The Clean Air Act explicitly criminalizes the falsification, tampering, and rendering inaccurate of these vital emissions control systems. This wasn’t accidental; it was a calculated effort to skirt the law.
A representative of P.T. Services, Inc. entered the guilty plea before United States Magistrate Judge Charmiane Claxton. As part of a plea agreement, the company has agreed to pay a substantial fine of $150,000.00. While a financial penalty is a step, it doesn’t undo the damage already inflicted on the environment.
The investigation was a joint effort, spearheaded by agents from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
