A Rochester man has pleaded guilty to stealing thousands of dollars in Social Security Income (SSI) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
Mensur Odzakovic, 49, was charged with wire fraud after he fraudulently collected $53,315.14 in SSI payments and $32,986.00 in SNAP benefits between 2007 and March 1, 2020.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle P. Rossi, Odzakovic claimed he was not employed and had no source of income to collect the benefits. However, he was continuously employed at a Rochester area restaurant earning cash wages.
The defendant’s actions resulted in him unlawfully collecting a total of $86,301.14 in benefits.
Odzakovic’s plea is the result of an investigation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Office of Inspector General, the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General, and the Monroe County Department of Social Services.
Sentencing is scheduled for July 29, 2021, before Chief U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci.
The maximum penalty for wire fraud is 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
