Mescalero Apache Man Sentenced for Sex Abuse Escape

ALBUQUERQUE – The grimy streets of Albuquerque witnessed a sentence handed down on the Mescalero Apache Nation member, Tyree Brent Mariano, 26, for his daring escape from a halfway house and failure to comply with sex offender registration laws. Today, in federal court, Mariano was sentenced to a harsh 21-month prison term, followed by three years of supervised release.

Mariano, who has been ensnared by the criminal justice system since his child sexual abuse conviction on April 19, 2012, found himself behind bars once again after breaching his parole. Mariano’s downfall began in June 2015 when he registered as a sex offender with Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and was housed at a halfway house in Albuquerque under strict supervision.

However, on June 27, 2015, the determined Mariano vanished without a trace, absconding from the halfway house. His brazen move came to light on May 21, 2016, when authorities finally apprehended him for violating the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), or as it’s more commonly known, the Adam Walsh Protection and Safety Act.

According to federal prosecutors, Mariano had been a ghost in Bernalillo County, failing to update his sex offender registration between July 8, 2015, and March 8, 2016. The U.S. Marshals Service and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office were instrumental in unraveling Mariano’s trail of deception.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander B. Shapiro, representing the U.S. Attorney’s Las Cruces Branch Office, prosecuted this case with unwavering dedication. Mariano now faces the consequences of his actions: time served in federal prison followed by an extended period of supervision, and he must once again register as a sex offender upon release.

As the dust settles on Mariano’s conviction, the Albuquerque community can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that justice has been served. The grimy streets are one step safer thanks to the relentless pursuit of this escaped sex offender by law enforcement.
