ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Julius Scott Mendez, a 30-year-old member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe and resident of Mescalero, New Mexico, has pleaded guilty to heinous acts of assault against his spouse or intimate partner on the Mescalero Apache Reservation.
In a chilling plea agreement, Mendez confessed to inflicting brutal injuries upon the victim by kicking, punching, and strangling her until she lost consciousness. Mendez will remain in custody until sentencing, which has yet to be scheduled.
Should he be sentenced as charged, Mendez faces up to ten years in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release for his violent actions on the reservation.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs conducted the investigation into this case. Assistant United States Attorneys Matilda McCarthy Villalobos and Eliot Neal are the prosecutors handling the matter with unwavering determination.
