OMAHA, NEBRASKA – Jessica Medina, a woman hailing from California, is trading sunshine for a federal prison cell after being sentenced to 70 months behind bars for her role in a methamphetamine distribution network that plagued the Omaha/Council Bluffs metro area. The sentence was handed down June 3, 2019, by Senior United States District Judge Laurie Smith Camp.
Medina, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine, wasn’t a kingpin, but a vital cog in the machine. Throughout early 2018, she acted as a courier, delivering the deadly drug to customers on behalf of Jasive Zamora-Carrillo, a resident of Council Bluffs, Iowa. The operation funneled methamphetamine into the streets, enriching criminals and fueling addiction.
This wasn’t a solo operation. Federal authorities have been systematically dismantling the organization, piece by piece. Zamora-Carrillo, Medina’s boss, already received a hefty 168-month sentence on February 25, 2019, for his central role in the conspiracy. Six other individuals involved in the scheme have also faced justice, with sentences already imposed.
United States Attorney Joseph P. Kelly’s office made the announcement, signaling a continued crackdown on drug trafficking in the region. The investigation, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration – Omaha Field Division, wasn’t conducted in a vacuum. The Omaha Police Department and the Southwest Iowa Narcotics Task Force provided crucial support, demonstrating a collaborative effort to stem the flow of illicit drugs.
Medina’s 70-month term isn’t the end of her federal entanglement. Following her imprisonment, she will be subject to a three-year term of supervised release, a period where her movements and activities will be closely monitored by parole officers. This case underscores the lengths to which drug organizations will go to distribute their poison, and the dedication of law enforcement to bring those responsible to justice.
The DEA’s Omaha Field Division continues to actively investigate drug trafficking organizations operating in the area, seeking to disrupt their operations and hold individuals accountable for their actions. This case serves as a warning: those who choose to participate in the drug trade will face severe consequences, no matter their role.
