LOUISVILLE, KY – The grim reaper of the drug trade met his match as a federal grand jury in Louisville returned four indictments charging 22 defendants with drug trafficking, firearms, and money laundering offenses. Led by methamphetamine kingpin James Havlicheck, the defendants face life sentences for their role in a $10 million drug ring.
The investigation, spanning across Kentucky and California, revealed a network of distributors who flooded the streets with meth and fentanyl, leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake. Havlicheck, 34, from California, was at the helm of this operation, alleged to have orchestrated the distribution of over 50 grams of methamphetamine.
Among the defendants, Ordell Smith, Jr., 38, from Louisville, stands accused of distributing over 50 grams of methamphetamine four separate times. Vanray O’Neal, also from Louisville, faces three counts of distributing meth and two counts of firearms trafficking, while Darren Render, 33, was charged with four counts of firearms trafficking, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, distribution of fentanyl, heroin, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
Render’s previous conviction for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person on April 2, 2020, adds a layer of severity to his charges. The defendants face mandatory minimum sentences ranging from 5 years to life in prison, with the possibility of additional penalties depending on sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors.
Acting Special Agent in Charge Olivia Olson of the FBI Louisville Field Office, along with U.S. Attorney Kyle G. Bumgarner and several law enforcement agencies, made the announcement. The indictments are a testament to the relentless efforts of law enforcement in cracking down on organized crime and drug trafficking.
Here’s a breakdown of the second indictment:
Antonio Taylor, 39; Terry Matthews, 44; Dylan Bradley, 21; Demetrius Brown, 42; Dominic McCray, 30; Joshua James, 42; Gregory Jackson, 34; Thai Quoc Tran, 24; and Devon Wilson, 43 were all charged with one count of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.
