Meth Kingpins Nabbed in Utah Bust

Salt Lake City, Utah – In a massive blow to Utah’s narcotics trade, a man and a woman have been indicted by a federal grand jury for their alleged roles in a large-scale methamphetamine and heroin operation.

Armida Viridiana Cayetano-Ruiz, 32, and Carlos Gerardo Brindas-Guzman, 30, both foreign nationals living in Salt Lake City, have been charged with possession of heroin with intent to distribute and possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

According to court documents, the pair became part of a criminal investigation in April 2024 after authorities received information that Cayetano-Ruiz was a suspected multi-state drug trafficker. On May 11, 2024, agents with the FBI Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force stopped the pair in Juab County, Utah, for a traffic violation. A K-9 Officer alerted to a positive indication of narcotics on the vehicle, leading to a search that yielded 11,435 grams of field-tested-positive methamphetamine and 3,835 grams of field-tested-positive heroin.

The massive seizure is a significant blow to the state’s narcotics trade, and authorities are hailing it as a major victory in the fight against drug trafficking. “This case is a prime example of the devastating impact that drug trafficking has on our communities,” said U.S. Attorney Trina A. Higgins. “We will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle these operations and bring those responsible to justice.”

The case is being investigated by the FBI Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force and is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. The case was also investigated under the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF).

Cayetano-Ruiz and Brindas-Guzman are scheduled to appear in court on May 30, 2024, at 9:15 a.m. before a U.S. Magistrate Judge at the United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City. An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The seizure is a reminder of the ongoing threat of drug trafficking in Utah and the importance of continued collaboration between law enforcement agencies to combat this issue. As the investigation continues, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
