Meth & Mayhem: Burlingame Admits Trafficking, Gun Charge

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Jeffrey Burlingame, 59, of Albuquerque, is facing a lengthy prison sentence after admitting today in federal court to trafficking methamphetamine and illegally possessing a firearm. The case, dating back to February 2016, highlights the continued flow of narcotics and associated weaponry through New Mexico’s streets.

Burlingame was initially arrested on February 24, 2016, following a search warrant execution at an Albuquerque residence. Agents weren’t looking for Burlingame specifically, but found him present amidst a cache of 450.55 grams of pure methamphetamine, cash, firearms, ammunition, and the tools of the trade – drug paraphernalia. The raid quickly expanded to include Burlingame as a key figure in the operation.

A grand jury indicted Burlingame on March 23, 2016, formally charging him with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and, critically, carrying a firearm in relation to that drug trafficking crime. The latter charge carries significantly harsher penalties, designed to deter criminals from combining drugs and guns – a deadly combination playing out across the nation.

During today’s proceedings, Burlingame offered a full guilty plea to both counts. He admitted to possessing the substantial amount of methamphetamine alongside a firearm and ammunition at the time of the February 2016 raid. The admission effectively closes the book on the investigation, shifting the focus to sentencing.

Burlingame now faces up to 20 years behind bars on the methamphetamine charge alone. However, the firearms charge carries a mandatory minimum of five years, and a potential life sentence, consecutive to whatever sentence he receives for the drugs. That means, at minimum, Burlingame will be spending a significant portion of his life in federal prison. He remains in custody while a sentencing hearing is scheduled.

The investigation was a joint effort between Homeland Security Investigations and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander M. Uballez is handling the prosecution, seeking to ensure Burlingame receives a sentence commensurate with the severity of his crimes. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and gun violence in Albuquerque and beyond.
