Meth & Mayhem: Rochester Man Gets 12+ Years

SOUTH BEND, IN – Solomon Newcomb, 30, of Rochester, Indiana, is headed to federal prison for over twelve years after pleading guilty to a serious narcotics charge. Newcomb was sentenced to 146 months imprisonment, followed by four years of supervised release, by United States District Court Judge Damon R. Leichty.

The case unfolded on September 22, 2024, when Fulton County officers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle carrying Newcomb. Instead of cooperating, Newcomb bolted, attempting to evade arrest. He didn’t get far. Officers quickly apprehended him, and a search of the vehicle revealed a backpack belonging to Newcomb packed with illegal substances.

Inside the backpack, investigators discovered approximately 150 grams of methamphetamine – enough to inflict serious damage on the community. But the danger didn’t stop there. Authorities also recovered an AR-style rifle and a staggering 300+ rounds of ammunition from Newcomb’s bags, painting a chilling picture of a drug dealer prepared for violence.

“Newcomb possessed and intended to distribute methamphetamine while heavily armed—a dangerous mix,” stated Acting United States Attorney M. Scott Proctor. “This wasn’t just about drugs; it was about escalating the threat of violence in our district. Thanks to the dedicated work of Fulton County officers and our team of investigators and prosecutors, Newcomb has been held accountable for trying to dispense this exceedingly harmful drug.”

The investigation was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) with crucial assistance from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office and the Indiana State Police. Assistant United States Attorney Joseph P. Falvey skillfully prosecuted the case, securing the lengthy sentence for Newcomb.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a broad-based initiative designed to reduce violent crime and gun violence by uniting law enforcement at all levels with the communities they serve. The Department’s renewed focus under PSN prioritizes fostering trust, supporting community organizations, strategically targeting enforcement, and rigorously measuring results – a commitment to making our neighborhoods safer, one arrest at a time.
