ALEXANDRIA, VA – Kimberly Roxann Braun, 34, of Escondido, California, is heading to federal prison for eleven years after admitting to running a cross-country methamphetamine pipeline. The sentence, handed down today by Senior U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III, marks a significant blow to a drug operation that stretched from the West Coast to the nation’s capital.
Braun pleaded guilty January 13th to charges stemming from her role in supplying Jimmy Oliver Zeigler II, a D.C.-area operator, with multiple pounds of high-potency methamphetamine. Court documents reveal Zeigler regularly made trips to California specifically to procure large quantities of the drug. Braun wasn’t just a supplier; she actively facilitated the operation, meeting with Zeigler on multiple occasions to arrange the purchases of pound quantities of meth.
The feds weren’t fooled by attempts to conceal the operation. Braun also leveraged the U.S. Postal Service, shipping approximately one pound of methamphetamine directly to one of Zeigler’s co-conspirators. This brazen use of the mail proved to be her undoing, drawing the attention of both the DEA and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
This case wasn’t a solo act. It was cracked as part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) program, dubbed “Ring of Ice.” OCDETF is a heavy-hitting federal initiative that throws funding and manpower at dismantling major drug trafficking organizations. The program’s goal: to choke off the nation’s illegal drug supply at its source.
U.S. Attorney Dana J. Boente for the Eastern District of Virginia, alongside Karl C. Colder, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA’s Washington Field Division, and Robert B. Wemyss, Inspector in Charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, announced the sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carina A. Cuellar spearheaded the prosecution, building a case that landed Braun behind bars.
Those seeking further details can find the Department of Justice press release on the U.S. Attorney’s Office website for the Eastern District of Virginia. Court documents related to United States v. Braun, Case No. 1:16-cr-269, are also available through the District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia or on PACER. This conviction serves as a stark reminder that drug trafficking, regardless of distance, will be met with federal prosecution.
