SALT LAKE CITY – In a stunning blow to the fentanyl trade, Mexican national Sabino Osvaldo Gomez-Perez, 36, faced justice today as he was sentenced to 57 months’ imprisonment for his role in a massive fentanyl ring operating across Utah and Arizona.
The sentence came after Gomez-Perez admitted to trafficking a staggering 58,000 fentanyl pills, seized by the FBI Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force. His guilty plea on May 29, 2025, for possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute, was the culmination of an investigation that began unraveling his criminal enterprise.
Court documents revealed Gomez-Perez’s October 9, 2024, possession of 5,857 grams of fentanyl—enough to fuel a deadly epidemic. His distribution activities were not confined to Utah; they reached into neighboring states, further cementing the organized nature of his criminal operations.
Acting U.S. Attorney Felice John Viti of the District of Utah announced the sentencing, emphasizing the importance of dismantling such high-level criminal organizations. The case was a testament to the effectiveness of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF), which leveraged a multi-agency approach to bring Gomez-Perez to justice.
The investigation and prosecution were led by the FBI Wasatch Metro Drug Task Force, with support from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah. Following his release, Gomez-Perez will be handed over to the Federal Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation proceedings.
