BROWNSVILLE, Texas – In a stunning blow to the online pedophile network, Juan Francisco Meza-Chavez, a 33-year-old Mexican national living in the United States illegally, has been sentenced to 97 months in federal prison for possession of child pornography. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.
Meza-Chavez pleaded guilty on September 5, 2023, before U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera. The court also ordered $45,000 in restitution to be paid to victims and imposed a 20-year term of supervised release following his prison sentence. During this period, Meza-Chavez will face strict restrictions on access to children and the internet, along with mandatory sex offender registration.
The investigation launched last May focused on the BitTorrent network, where authorities identified the IP addresses of individuals sharing child pornography. One of these addresses was linked back to Meza-Chavez. On October 13, 2022, law enforcement executed a search warrant at his residence and seized numerous electronic devices containing 40 videos and 11 images of child pornography.
Meza-Chavez will remain in custody until transferred to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted the investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Ana C. Cano prosecuted the case under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative targeting child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Project Safe Childhood, initiated by the Department of Justice in 2006, has been instrumental in identifying, apprehending, and prosecuting those who exploit children. For more information on this crucial effort, visit the DOJ’s PSC page.
