Mexican National Sentenced for 88 Pounds of Meth

A Mexican national has been sentenced in federal court for his role in a massive methamphetamine trafficking operation. Juan Emilio Gomez-Padilla, 32, a resident of Chicago, Illinois, was handed 11 years and six months in federal prison without parole on Thursday, May 30.

The sentence came after Gomez-Padilla pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. The plea deal was a result of his role in a car stop on April 5, 2021, in Saline County, Missouri, where over 88 pounds of methamphetamine was found in the trunk of a car.

Gomez-Padilla was a passenger in a white 2011 Volkswagen Jetta driven by Gustavo Renteria-Rojas, 40, another Mexican national residing in Chicago. The car was stopped by a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper, who found four white cardboard boxes in the trunk containing 36 packages of methamphetamine. The total weight of the meth was 88.7 pounds.

The trooper also found a loaded Smith & Wesson .380-caliber handgun and $5,505 in cash in the car. Gomez-Padilla’s co-defendants, Jose Alfredo Renteria-Rojas, 35, and Gustavo Renteria-Rojas, were each sentenced to 11 years and six months in federal prison without parole for their roles in the drug-trafficking conspiracy and for illegally possessing a firearm.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Q. McCarther prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Gomez-Padilla was also ordered to forfeit to the government $5,505 that was seized by law enforcement.

This case marks the third and final defendant to be sentenced in this case. The convictions bring an end to a significant methamphetamine trafficking operation that was operating in the Midwest. Gomez-Padilla’s sentence is a reminder of the harsh penalties that come with engaging in such activities.
