Mexican National Sentenced for Illegal Reentry

LAS VEGAS – A Mexican national was handed a 13-month and one-day prison sentence yesterday, followed by three years of supervised release, for illegal reentry into the United States. The U.S. Chief District Judge Andrew Gordan imposed the punishment on Jose Ricardo Lopez Munoz.

Lopez Munoz, who had been deported to Mexico in 1995, 1997, and 2013, was apprehended by state law enforcement in Clark County, Nevada, on November 28, 2023, for making a false statement to obstruct a public officer. Court documents revealed a history of felony convictions, including menacing from the District Court in El Paso County, Colorado, in 2002, and challenging to fight with a deadly weapon while assisting a criminal gang out of Clark County, Nevada, in 2007.

After serving over six years behind bars, Lopez Munoz was deported once more in 2013. Now, following his guilty plea on one count of Deported Alien Found in the United States, he faces deportation for a fourth time upon completion of his sentence.

Acting United States Attorney Sigal Chattah and Salt Lake City Field Office Acting Director Jason Knight announced the sentencing, which was investigated by the ICE Salt Lake City, Las Vegas Sub-Office and prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada. The public is encouraged to report crimes and suspicious activity through 866-DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423) or an online tip form.
