Miami Man Gets Life for Child Porn

MIAMI, FL – Manuel Perez Gonzalez, 39, of Miami, will spend the next century behind bars after being sentenced yesterday to 100 years in federal prison for a sickening trove of child pornography. U.S. District Judge Ursula Ungaro handed down the harsh sentence following Gonzalez’s conviction at trial on charges of distribution, receipt, and possession of obscene material involving children. The sentence also includes a 25-year period of supervised release and mandatory registration as a sex offender upon his eventual release – if he ever sees freedom again.

The case, announced jointly by U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer, ICE-HSI Special Agent in Charge Mark Selby, USSS Special Agent in Charge Brian Swain, Miami-Dade Police Director Juan J. Perez, and Miami Beach Police Chief Daniel J. Oates, stems from a raid conducted on October 22, 2015. Law enforcement descended on Gonzalez’s residence after receiving credible information regarding the download of child pornography using a computer at the location.

During the search, agents seized Gonzalez’s laptop and a backup disc from another computer within the home. A meticulous forensic examination of these devices uncovered not only a horrifying collection of child pornography but also photographs of Gonzalez himself, alongside evidence of his activity on social media. Crucially, witnesses who resided at the home testified that Gonzalez was the primary user of the laptop found to contain the illegal images.

“This isn’t about victimless crime,” stated a source within the U.S. Attorney’s office, speaking on background. “These images represent the brutal exploitation of innocent children, and Gonzalez actively participated in perpetuating that abuse. The length of the sentence reflects the gravity of his actions and sends a clear message: we will relentlessly pursue and prosecute those who prey on children.”

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jonathan Kobrinski, Benjamin Widlanski, and Ignacio Vazquez spearheaded the prosecution, ensuring that Gonzalez faced the full weight of the law. The case was brought under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 dedicated to combating the escalating epidemic of child exploitation and abuse. The project pools resources from federal, state, and local agencies to locate, apprehend, and prosecute offenders, while also prioritizing the rescue of victims.
