Convicted Felon Sentenced for Gun Charges in Charlotte, NC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Michael Anthony Cornwell, a 30-year-old convicted felon, was sentenced to 106 months in prison and two years of supervised release for firearms offenses, announced Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

Cornwell was arrested on September 13, 2022 by Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers on an outstanding warrant and was subsequently charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.

During the search of Cornwell’s residence, law enforcement seized multiple rounds of various ammunition, a .40 caliber drum magazine, multiple rifle magazines, a gun sight, digital scales, and a distribution quantity of marijuana. A loaded 40 caliber Glock semi-automatic pistol was also seized from Cornwell’s vehicle.

Cornwell has prior felony convictions, which prohibited him from possessing firearms or ammunition. He pleaded guilty to the charges on January 10, 2025 and is currently in federal custody, awaiting transfer to the custody of the federal Bureau of Prisons.

U.S. Attorney Ferguson commended the ATF and CMPD for their investigation of the case, stating, ‘Their hard work and dedication to justice are commendable.’

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime.
