OGDEN, UTAH – In a shocking turn of events, a federal jury in Salt Lake City has returned a guilty verdict against Michael Anthony Rangel, a 42-year-old convicted felon, for unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition in 2022. According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Rangel knew he was a convicted felon and restricted from possessing a firearm and ammunition, yet he still possessed a Taurus PT111 G2 pistol during a traffic stop in Ogden in July 2022.
The Ogden Metro Gang Task Force conducted the traffic stop on a vehicle with Rangel as the passenger. Officers seized the firearm and associated ammunition, which was later discovered to have been manufactured outside the State of Utah and had traveled through interstate commerce. This discovery further highlights the severity of Rangel’s actions.
The case against Rangel is being investigated by the Ogden Metro Gang Task Force. Special Assistant United States Attorney Branden B. Miles and Assistant United States Attorney Luisa Gough of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah are prosecuting the case.
United States Attorney Trina A. Higgins of the District of Utah made the announcement regarding Rangel’s guilty verdict. Higgins stated, [no quote].
The guilty verdict in this case demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement to reducing gun violence and other violent crime in our communities. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.
Michael Anthony Rangel’s sentencing will be held at a later date before U.S. District Court Judge Howard C. Nielson, Jr. at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City.
