SCRANTON, Pennsylvania – Federal authorities have sentenced a notorious inmate to an additional 63 months in prison for brutally assaulting another inmate with a sharpened metal shank.
Michael Caraballo, 37, was handed down the harsh sentence by U.S. District Judge Robert D. Mariani yesterday.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Caraballo previously pleaded guilty to assaulting another inmate at USP Canaan with the deadly shank in February 2017.
The metal shank, a contraband item in federal prisons, was found in Caraballo’s possession during the incident.
Caraballo is currently serving a sentence for drug trafficking in the District of Vermont.
However, due to the severity of the assault, Judge Mariani ordered the 63-month sentence to run consecutive to the existing sentence, adding an additional two to five years to Caraballo’s overall prison term.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Prisons Special Investigative Service, with Assistant United States Attorney Robert J. O’Hara prosecuting the case.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney John C. Gurganus said, ‘We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that our prisons remain safe for both inmates and corrections officers.’
