A massive illegal arsenal was found in the Beaumont home of 44-year-old Michael Jon Gelagotis, leading to a 100-month federal prison sentence. Gelagotis, a convicted felon, admitted to possessing 34 firearms, over 30,000 rounds of ammunition, and a ballistic vest—violating federal law that bars felons from owning weapons.
On September 24, 2015, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Gelagotis’s residence following a violation of his state probation for impersonating a public servant. What they uncovered was no ordinary stash: high-caliber rifles, semi-automatic pistols, a shotgun, more than 40 large-capacity 223 caliber magazines, and enough ammunition to fuel a small militia.
Gelagotis pleaded guilty on August 17, 2016, to being a felon in possession of a firearm. U.S. District Judge Marcia A. Crone handed down the 100-month sentence in federal court today. The conviction stems from a federal indictment returned on May 4, 2016, by a grand jury in the Eastern District of Texas.
The defendant’s criminal history dates back decades. Gelagotis was previously convicted of risk of injury in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1993, and grand larceny in Newport, Vermont, in 1997. Those convictions stripped him of his constitutional right to bear arms—rights he chose to ignore while stockpiling a dangerous private arsenal.
This case was prosecuted under Project Safe Neighborhoods, a federal initiative targeting gun violence through collaboration between local, state, and federal law enforcement. The goal: remove illegal weapons from dangerous individuals and make communities safer. Gelagotis’s hoard represented a clear and present danger, officials say.
The investigation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Beaumont Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney John B. Ross prosecuted. Acting U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston confirmed the sentencing, emphasizing that illegal gun possession won’t be tolerated in the Eastern District of Texas.
