A Utah man has been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender in Idaho, according to a recent federal court ruling.
Michael Keith Pilgrim, 44, of Salt Lake City, Utah, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge David C. Nye on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, after pleading guilty to failing to register as a sex offender.
Pilgrim was originally convicted in October 1999, of sexual abuse of a child in Utah. As a result of the conviction, he was required to register and update his registration under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). SORNA requires that sex offenders register and keep current their registration in each jurisdiction where they reside.
In early March 2018, Pilgrim moved from Utah to Preston, Idaho. He lived in Preston for approximately two months before returning in July 2018. It was during this time that he failed to register with the Idaho Sex Offender Registry.
Pilgrim was apprehended on July 27, 2018, and subsequently charged with failing to register as a sex offender.
This case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, with the assistance of local and state law enforcement agencies in eastern Idaho, including the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Preston Police Department.
The case is a stark reminder of the importance of sex offender registration and the consequences of failing to comply with these regulations.
