Tampa, Florida – A Local Man’s Descent into Gun Violence
A convicted felon with a history of violent behavior has been sentenced to 15 years and 8 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm and ammunition in Sarasota, Florida.
According to court documents, on May 28, 2017, Michael Moore, 37, had an altercation with his girlfriend during which he removed her loaded firearm from her car and hid it in a friend’s apartment. The girlfriend then notified police that Moore had stolen her firearm. Days later, after Moore and his girlfriend had reconciled, he retrieved her loaded firearm from the apartment and returned it to her.
At the time of the incident, Moore had at least 10 prior felony convictions and is therefore prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law.
Moore was found guilty by a federal jury on December 7, 2017, and was subsequently sentenced by U.S. District Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell.
The court also ordered Moore to forfeit the firearm and ammunition used in the offense.
Law enforcement officials praised the successful prosecution of Moore, citing the importance of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) program in reducing violent crime in the community.
The PSN program, reinvigorated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions in 2017, aims to bring together all levels of law enforcement to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
