DAYTON, Ohio – A former corrections officer was sentenced to 12 months in prison for attempting to extort cash from an inmate in exchange for smuggling contraband into the Montgomery County Jail.
Michael Rose, 29, of New Carlisle, Ohio, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Walter H. Rice on no date specified in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.
Rose pleaded guilty in February to one count of attempted extortion under the color of law. He was accused of agreeing to bring a cell phone into the jail in exchange for $1,500 in cash from an inmate in November 2016. He also smuggled in a second cell phone and met with an associate of the inmate near a Dayton retail store to receive payment.
“Any time a public employee takes a bribe, that is a breach of the public trust, but it is difficult to imagine a more serious instance of this crime than a corrections officer taking bribes from inmates in exchange for smuggling into the jail phones with which the inmates could carry on trafficking drugs,” said U.S. Attorney Benjamin C. Glassman.
The investigation was conducted by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office RANGE Task Force and the FBI. Assistant United States Attorney Brent Tabacchi represented the United States in this case.
Rose’s crimes were a breach of the public trust, and his sentence reflects the severity of his actions. He will serve 12 months in federal prison for his crimes.
The public has a right to trust its public officials, and when that trust is broken, justice must be served. Rose’s sentence is a reminder of the consequences of public corruption.
