In a highly publicized case, Michael Smallwood, a 35-year-old defendant, stood trial for his alleged involvement in a violent crime in Delaware.
The case, which was filed on July 15, 2008, in the District of Delaware Federal District Court, saw Smallwood facing multiple charges, including armed robbery, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm.
According to eyewitness accounts, Smallwood, along with his accomplice, had entered a convenience store in Wilmington, Delaware, on a fateful night in April 2008. The duo allegedly brandished a firearm and demanded cash from the store clerk.
The clerk, however, managed to escape and raise an alarm, prompting the police to arrive at the scene within minutes. A shootout ensued, leaving one officer injured and the accomplice dead.
Smallwood was subsequently arrested and charged with multiple federal crimes.
During the trial, which began in August 2008, the prosecution presented a wealth of evidence against Smallwood, including eyewitness testimony, forensic analysis, and video footage.
The defense, on the other hand, argued that Smallwood was not the mastermind behind the heist and that the accomplice had acted alone.
On October 10, 2008, after a month-long trial, the jury delivered a guilty verdict on all counts, including armed robbery and attempted murder. Smallwood was subsequently sentenced to 25 years in prison.
