Michigan City Man Sentenced for Gun Possession as Felon
HAMMOND – In a move aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence, a Michigan City man has been sentenced to 100 months in prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
Sergio Gamez, 33, of Michigan City, Indiana, pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Philip P. Simon. Gamez will also serve 2 years of supervised release following his prison term.
According to court documents, Gamez was found to be in possession of a firearm despite knowing he had multiple prior felony convictions that prohibited him from owning such a weapon.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, with assistance from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, the Hammond Police Department, and the Highland Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Caitlin M. Padula.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, and setting strategic enforcement priorities.
The Department of Justice’s violent crime reduction strategy, launched in 2021, focuses on strengthening PSN by setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results. By taking a comprehensive approach, the Department aims to make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
The sentencing of Gamez serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal laws regarding firearms. As the Department continues to work towards reducing violent crime and gun violence, it’s essential to hold individuals accountable for their actions.
In related news, the Department has been actively working to reduce violent crime and gun violence across the country. The PSN program has been instrumental in this effort, with a focus on community-based approaches and targeted enforcement strategies.
The case against Gamez is a prime example of the Department’s commitment to holding individuals accountable for their actions and making neighborhoods safer for everyone.
