Michigan Man Jersey Accused of Attacking Capitol Police

WASHINGTON D.C. – Another name added to the ever-growing list of those facing justice for the January 6th Capitol riot. Justin Jersey, 31, of Flint, Michigan, is now facing federal charges for allegedly participating in the assault on Metropolitan Police Department officers during the chaotic breach of the U.S. Capitol building.

Jersey is accused of not only joining in the initial assault of an MPD officer at approximately 4:27 p.m. on January 6th, but also of actively escalating the violence. The indictment alleges Jersey armed himself with a baton and used it to strike at additional MPD officers attempting to maintain order amidst the chaos. He’s been charged with federal offenses including assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers and inflicting bodily injury, civil disorder, and entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds with a deadly or dangerous weapon.

The arrest of Jersey comes as part of a larger, ongoing investigation into the Capitol breach, and he’s been named as an additional defendant in a third superseding indictment. He joins seven other individuals already facing charges in the same case: Logan James Barnhart, of Lansing, Michigan; Michael John Lopatic Sr., of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Ronald Colton McAbee, of Unionville, Tennessee; Clayton Ray Mullins, of Benton, Kentucky; Jeffrey Sabol, of Kittredge, Colorado; Peter Francis Stager, of Conway, Arkansas, and Jack Wade Whitton, of Locust Grove, Georgia. Charges against Sabol and Whitton have been expanded to include civil disorder.

Jersey was apprehended in his hometown of Flint, Michigan, and made his initial court appearance in the Eastern District of Michigan today. He is currently being detained pending further proceedings in Washington D.C. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section are prosecuting the case, with assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan.

The FBI’s Washington Field Office, along with the Flint Resident Agency of the Detroit Field Office, spearheaded the investigation, identifying Jersey as #106 in their publicly released photos seeking information. They received crucial support from the Metropolitan Police Department, the U.S. Capitol Police, and other FBI field offices. This case, like so many others stemming from January 6th, highlights the relentless effort to hold those responsible accountable.

To date, more than 675 individuals have been arrested in nearly all 50 states in connection with the Capitol breach, with over 210 facing charges related to assaulting or impeding law enforcement. The investigation remains active, and authorities are still seeking tips. Anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (800-225-5324) or submit information online at tips.fbi.gov. It’s crucial to remember that these are allegations, and Jersey is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
