MEMPHIS, TN – Glenn Miller, 29, will spend the next 466 months – more than 38 years – locked in a federal prison cell after being sentenced for a brazen pair of armed carjackings that terrorized Memphis residents in June 2022. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Sheryl H. Lipman on June 12, 2024, sends a clear message: violent crime won’t be tolerated on the streets of this city.
The first incident unfolded on Chelsea Avenue, where Miller strong-armed a man at gunpoint, forcing him into his own vehicle. Holding the victim captive, Miller drove around Memphis before dumping him on the side of the road and making off with the car. But Miller wasn’t finished. Minutes later, just around the corner on Maplewood Avenue, he encountered a second victim seated in their car.
This time, the encounter turned immediately violent. Miller opened fire, striking the second victim twice in the face. Miraculously, the victim survived the brutal attack, but suffered severe injuries. Undeterred, Miller then stole the second car and attempted to flee, but was swiftly apprehended by the Memphis Police Department later that same day. A search revealed Miller was carrying three firearms at the time of his arrest.
“Armed carjackings tear at the fabric of our society,” stated United States Attorney Kevin G. Ritz. “This defendant will spend more than 38 years in federal prison for committing multiple armed carjackings. Our office will continue to seek justice for victims of violent crime by holding offenders accountable for their actions.” ATF Special Agent in Charge Marcus S. Watson added, “Carjacking investigations are a priority. We will continue to deploy traditional investigative techniques overlayed with cutting edge technology to deter these types of violent activities.”
Miller initially pled guilty to carjacking the second victim and a related firearms charge, as well as three counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm on November 17, 2023. He then took the remaining charges related to the first carjacking to a federal jury. On February 27, 2024, that jury delivered a swift verdict, convicting Miller on all counts after less than an hour of deliberation. Judge Lipman’s sentence includes three years of supervised release after Miller completes his lengthy prison term – a meaningless gesture in a federal system with no parole.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Memphis Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Regina Thompson and Greg Wagner were instrumental in securing the conviction and lengthy sentence. This case is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement and the devastating impact of violent crime on our communities.
