A somber scene unfolded at the Omaha station as Clara Barton Smith, wanted in connection with the death of Oklahoma millionaire Jake L. Hamon, surrendered to Sheriff Buck Garrett of Ardmore, Oklahoma. The 23rd of December, 1920, marked the culmination of a manhunt that had traversed the border, with Smith arriving in Omaha at 6:45 P.M. on a train from Chihuahua City. As she stepped off the train, Smith rushed to the sheriff, extending her hand in a gesture of camaraderie and exclaiming, ‘Mr. Garrett, I’m so glad to see you.’ Garrett, unfazed by the display, led Smith to a waiting automobile, where a party of officers and attorneys awaited her arrival.
