Milos Mihajlovic, Attempted Aggravated Murder, Washington 2008

A chilling case of attempted murder has come to a close with the deportation of 29-year-old Milos Mihajlovic from the United States. Mihajlovic, a native of Serbia, was wanted for his alleged role as a getaway driver in a murder and attempted murder investigation.

According to the INTERPOL Washington, Mihajlovic entered the US in May 2008 as a nonimmigrant visitor. However, he found himself at the center of a murder investigation after a shooting in Nis, Serbia, left one person dead and two others injured in April 2008. INTERPOL issued a red notice for Mihajlovic on June 20, 2011, for attempted aggravated murder and unlawful possession of arms and explosives.

Mihajlovic’s troubles began when he was encountered by a Fairfax Police Department officer in northern Virginia. He was subsequently turned over to ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Washington. An immigration judge ordered Mihajlovic removed in November 2011, but he appealed the decision to the Board of Immigration Appeals, who remanded the case for additional evidence and testimony. The judge again ordered his removal on March 4.

“Individuals like Mihajlovic, who come to the United States to find safe haven from crimes they committed in their native country, are not welcome here and will be removed,” said M. Yvonne Evans, field office director for ERO Washington.

This investigation and removal was a result of coordination between HSI Attaché Vienna, HSI Attaché Paris, the Regional Security Office Belgrade, INTERPOL Washington, and INTERPOL Belgrade. Since October 1, 2009, ERO has removed over 646 foreign fugitives from the US who were being sought in their native countries for serious crimes, including kidnapping, rape, and murder.

The deportation of Mihajlovic is a significant success in efforts to bring foreign fugitives to justice. As the US continues to work with international partners to identify and remove those who have committed crimes abroad, it sends a clear message: no one is above the law, regardless of their nationality or location.
