Assaulting a Federal Officer Lands Mission Man 8 Months in Custody

A 47-year-old Mission man has been sentenced to 8 months in custody for assaulting a federal officer, the Grimy Times has learned.

Richard One Feather, 47, was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange on January 30, 2017, after pleading guilty to "Assaulting, Opposing, Resisting, and Impeding a Federal Officer."

According to court documents, the assault occurred on March 29, 2016, when a Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services officer observed One Feather’s speeding and swerving. The officer pursued One Feather to a house in the Soldier Creek Community, where he exited the vehicle visibly intoxicated and refused to comply with the officer’s commands.

One Feather actively resisted arrest, kicking the officer in the leg, prompting the officer to pepper-spray him and place him on the ground before handcuffing him. The officer’s quick thinking and professionalism prevented the situation from escalating further.

The incident sparked a thorough investigation by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk W. Albertson prosecuting the case. One Feather was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

As part of his sentence, One Feather must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He will also serve 2 years of supervised release following his 8-month custody term.

The Grimy Times has learned that One Feather was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 13, 2016, and pled guilty on November 8, 2016.
