Crime in the Heartland: Mission Woman Indicted for Assaulting a Federal Officer
Carlianna Erickson, a 25-year-old woman from Mission, South Dakota, has been hit with a serious charge after allegedly assaulting a federal officer on May 4, 2021, in Todd County.
According to a federal indictment, Erickson is accused of physically assaulting a law enforcement officer employed by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe. The indictment states that Erickson ‘did assault, oppose, impede, intimidate, and interfere with a law enforcement officer who was employed by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, and that such conduct involved physical contact.’
The maximum penalty for Erickson, if convicted, could be up to eight years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
Erickson appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on August 9, 2021, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The investigation is being conducted by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson prosecuting the case.
The Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services is leading the investigation into the assault, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson is tasked with prosecuting the case. Erickson has been remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial, but a trial date has not been set.
