Pitchfork & Zip Ties: Missouri Man Faces Jan. 6 Felony Charges

A Raytown, Missouri man, Christopher Brian Roe, 39, is facing serious federal charges for his role in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Roe isn’t accused of merely being present; the feds allege he actively engaged in violence against law enforcement while armed with a disturbing array of potential weapons.

According to court documents unsealed this week, Roe allegedly carried a pitchfork, zip ties, and duct tape into the Capitol building alongside the mob attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The presence of these items raises significant questions about pre-planning and intent, suggesting Roe wasn’t simply caught up in the moment. He’s accused of targeting multiple police officers with physical assault during the chaos.

The breach of the Capitol disrupted the joint session of Congress as they were certifying the electoral votes. Lawmakers were forced to evacuate, and the democratic process ground to a halt as rioters swarmed the building. Roe is alleged to have entered the House of Representatives wing, further escalating the situation and contributing to the widespread disorder. The feds claim he didn’t stop at just entering the building, but actively clashed with officers attempting to regain control.

Roe now faces five felony counts: assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers; civil disorder; entering a restricted building with a deadly weapon; disorderly conduct in a restricted building with a deadly weapon; and engaging in physical violence in a restricted building with a deadly weapon. These aren’t minor offenses; each carries a potential prison sentence, and the combined penalties could keep Roe locked up for years if convicted.

The FBI’s Kansas City and Washington Field Offices spearheaded the investigation, working in concert with the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department. Federal prosecutors for the District of Columbia are handling the case, with support from the Department of Justice’s National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section. This isn’t an isolated case. The feds have been relentlessly pursuing those involved in the January 6th attack, and so far, over 1,069 individuals have been arrested nationwide.

While Roe is presumed innocent until proven guilty, the evidence presented thus far paints a grim picture. The feds will need to demonstrate beyond a reasonable doubt that he committed the alleged acts, but the presence of a pitchfork, zip ties, and accusations of assaulting officers present a significant challenge for his defense. This case, like many others stemming from January 6th, underscores the gravity of the attack on American democracy and the ongoing efforts to hold those responsible accountable.
