MOBILE, AL – Jay Kimberly Ponder is heading to federal prison for a decade after pleading guilty to flooding the Mobile, Alabama region with methamphetamine. Chief Judge Kristi K. DuBose of the United States District Court handed down the 120-month sentence – followed by five years of supervised release – on June 2, 2017, finally bringing down a key player in the local drug trade.
The case began to unfold in 2015, with a joint investigation launched by a multi-agency task force. The FBI, DEA, Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, Mobile Police Department, and U.S. Marshals Service all contributed to building a case against Ponder, uncovering a network dedicated to the distribution of the highly addictive drug. Authorities quickly determined Ponder wasn’t a first-time offender.
According to court records, Ponder, with an “extensive criminal history,” operated as a central figure in the methamphetamine supply chain. The investigation revealed he wasn’t just moving product; he was responsible for widespread distribution throughout the city and surrounding areas. The specific charge levied against him was conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, a violation of 21 USC § 846(a)(1).
Ponder entered a guilty plea on December 1, 2016, seemingly attempting to mitigate the damage. However, Judge DuBose wasn’t swayed. The 120-month sentence reflects the severity of the crime and Ponder’s history of lawbreaking. It’s a clear message that such activity won’t be tolerated in the Southern District of Alabama.
Acting United States Attorney Steve Butler emphasized the importance of collaborative law enforcement in bringing down drug traffickers like Ponder. “This case demonstrates the power of federal and local agencies working together to dismantle drug networks and protect our communities,” Butler stated. The successful prosecution sends a strong signal to others involved in similar criminal enterprises.
Assistant United States Attorney Lawrence J. Bullard skillfully prosecuted the case for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama. While Ponder is now behind bars, the fight against methamphetamine trafficking continues. Grimy Times will continue to follow this story and report on the ongoing efforts to clean up the streets of Mobile and beyond.
